Youth Triumph at the Sound of the Uni-horn.

You would have been forgiven for thinking Saturdays youth encounter was the seniors playing a week early; such was the size of the crowd at Trinity Fields. And they were in fine voice for a feisty battle between two youth sides keen to get their season underway proper.

As expected with a local derby the ferocity in defence was thumping and in that defending seemed to be the order of the day. Matthew Bradbury was unfortunate to receive a yellow for a fairly innocuous tackle and Penallta immediately felt the pressure of being a man down as the Nelson pack drove deep into Penallta’s half.

Despite the lion’s share of possession and a deluge of territory it was Penallta that broke the deadlock, through an own half break out and quick turnover ball leading to Joe Dyer crossing which young Keepy duly converted. Nelson rallied straight back and went 1 point in front from a penalty and converted try setting up a very nervy second half.

It’s sure that Nelson must have left Trinity Fields feeling a little hard done by as they dominated possession and territory in the second half. It was only broken up by a disallowed try for young Keep, unceremoniously judged in touch by his own coach Geraint Thomas, and Joe Dyer’s second touchdown.

It setup a very nervy finale as Nelson pounded the Penallta line, with backs and forwards combining relentlessly to test the youth’s resolve. It’s fair to say Ben Griff must have been extremely proud of his boys defence, as well as putting in a hell of a shift himself, to gain bragging rights for a short while as a rip to Nelson later in the season is in the offing.

Ben and the boys now move onto their first league game with a tough trip to Newbridge next Saturday in the first league game of the season.

Many thanks, Dai Fixtures.
