U11’s weekly update……!

The week started well for the Mini Pitmen. After attending the first district training session, 6 Mini Pitmen were selected to face Cardiff Schools U11’s. Haydn Butcher, Cameron Foreman, Morgan Bell and Iestyn Davies were all selected for the A team, whilst Taren Stevens and Cai Wardman were selected for the B team.

The matches were played away at Pentyrch Rfc. Both games were extremely difficult, as Cardiff Schools were very organised in defence and carried strongly in attack. However, the Mini Pitmen put in a fantastic shift as always doing everyone proud. Cai Wardman even gained a try and was chosen as the B team ‘Man of the Match’. Well done to everyone involved!

This week the District have selected 10 Mini Pitmen, with Ieuan Smyth, Efan Betts, Rhys Oakley and Ceri Baldwin all joining the teams. To have 10 players representing the district out of a match day squad of 35 is a huge achievement. Another fantastic well done to all the players selected. We’ve still got a few to go, so keep training hard and it won’t be long!

Last Sunday we hosted our annual tournament where 8 teams played throughout the day. The tournament was a huge success and I’ve received no end of good comments on the organisation and running of the tournament from our many visitors. The teams who entered played some of the best rugby we’ve seen played on our pitches. A big well done to everyone who entered and thank you for supporting us. Also a massive thank you to all our parents and parents from other age groups for helping to run the day, the coaches from all teams who helped to referee and Arwel Robson and Ellis Shipp for giving up their time to present medals to the players.

The performance of the Mini Pitmen throughout the day was sublime. The tries we were scoring were fantastic, but what was more pleasing was the fact that everyone had the same amount of game time and all the players from 1-23 all played exceptionally well. The Mini Pitmen (unofficially!) won their first 3 matches, and lost their last match, due to some soft tries early on. The Mini Pitmen battled back however, almost earning a draw.

Final (unofficial!) scores:        Penallta 45-10 Bedwas

       Penallta 15-10 Abercynon

       Penallta 25-10 Bargoed

       Penallta 15-20 Deri

Up next: Rhymney Valley District U11’s v Neath Schools – Home, Saturday, 12pm KO, CSE.

Penallta v Bedwas – Home, Sunday, Meet at 11:15am, Trinity 2.
