First home game of the season saw Penallta under 14's take on Abercwmboi.
The boys won the last encounter between the two teams, but that was the only victory in 6 seasons.
The game started with the opposition demonstrating a good defence, not committing numbers to the breakdown and closing down options. Our attack was very stagnant and showed few signs of making any breakthrough.
It was Aber who opened the scoring after previously grounding the ball on the wrong line. They added the two points with ease.
The Pitmen were chomping at the bit and after some good interplay between the backs and forwards, Ethan Berry sneaked over the line from a foot out.
Abercwmboi started to lose their discipline, which wasn't helped by their coaches and parents being abusive on the sidelines. This eventually led to them conceding a number of penalties.
The second half, Penallta stepped up a gear and after a lot of pressure Edison crossed the line to give us an advantage. Under further pressure, Abercwmboi started to lose their cool, not helped by the great timing of Edison and the rest of the backs. Aber made mistakes at the breakdown and in full view of the referee, but instead of accepting the decisions they chose to argue with and insult the ref. This saw them being marched back on a number of different occasions. This eventually saw Evan Ford kick our very first 3 pointer.
The visitors took the restart and the ball found its way into the hands of Josh Tugby. The expression a hot knife through butter comes to mind as Josh sliced through the opposition defence to score a 55 metre run in. Evan slotted over the conversion.
The visitors were not finished though and took advantage of lapse in concentration to close the gap with 10 minutes to go. They once again added the extras.
The game was extremely competitive until the final whistle but penallta held on to take the win.
A few names to mention, Ryan Moses for his running on and off the ball, Ethan Berry for his line out. Mikey Carter for his workrate, Evan Watkinsfor his debut on his birthday, Edison for being a nuisance and the work of the back's who shut down and neutralised the opposition attack and Sam for being Mr versatile, slotting into fullback.
Final score Penallta 20-14 Abercwmboi.
Man of the match was Edison and sausage was most improved.
